The transgenic tomato is the first commercialized genetically modified variety both domestic and abroad,however,the economic value study of genetically modified crops is focus just on the main field crops,such as cotton,soybean,corn and rice,etc.,the economic study of transgenic vegetables is nearly a blank.In recent years,the Chinese government continued to increase investment in biotechnology research,which accounts 15%of total budget of Chinese agricultural research,it is much higher than the rate of other developing countries eg.2-5%,meanwhile,the commercialization of the research achievement is one of the main way to make the investment effect,which is also the weakest part of Chinese agriculture research system.The transformation rate of agricultural scientific and technological achievements is only 30-40%,which is much lower in university(even less than 10%).So what is the value of transgenic vegetable variety? How to choose the fight methods of commercialization? How to distribute the investment revenue? Is the channel of technology transforming reasonable? The research object of this paper is to answer these questions.In order to fulfill these objectives,we based on the case of the first commercial GM long shelf life tomato in China,surveyed different vegetable research institutions, interviewed the inventor and some other GM vegetable experts,conducted the questionnaire of the tomato supply chain,and gathered data from relevant yearbooks.The main theory is the economic surplus and transformation cost theory,with the methods of net present value and triangular fuzzy AHP,our main findings and conclusions as follows:Through the calculation,only one transgenic long shelf life tomato variety(e.g.No.1 Huafan),the added economic value is more than 400 million RMB while the research investment is less than 1 million RMB.If the function long shelf life gene is applied to other similar varieties,then the potential value will surplus 1.5 billion RMB,so with the genetically modified technology,the potential market value is huge even just one single function gene.As the biotechnology product is specialized,professional,long investment cycled and huge research risky,the high transaction cost limits the research achievement limited effect in the production and commercialization.It is found that the specialized cooperative research and commercialization model that combined different kinds of shareholders is more effective than the one-time technology transfer and integrated research and commercialization,which can be easier to reduce the research risk and enhance the communication between research and market,and then improve the research and commercialization performance.According to the research results,the paper puts forward the following policy suggestions:1.the value of GM tomato is huge and worth the research input and transformation;2.improve the multilateral corporation in the value chain to promote the commercialization of GM vegetables.
