The Sixteenth National Congress of CPC pointed out that the important task of building a moderately prosperous society in all respects is to construct modern agriculture, develop agricultural economy and increase farmers'income. The task would be completed by the industrialization, urbanization and modernization in rural areas, which needs to strengthen farmer training and exploitation of rural labour force resources, bring up a great number of new-typed farmers with good consciousness, technical abilities and business skills, and fully improve Chinese farmers'moral, cultural and scientific qualities. At present, the farmer training work in China has not met the requirement of building a well-off society in an all-around way and agricultural modernization, and is faced with many problems in theory and practice which need further studies. This paper defines the concepts of farmer, new-typed farmer, farmer training and farmer training model. It analyzes the past achievements in the farmer training in China and the continuous improvement in the cultural, scientific, physical and moral qualities of the farmers as well as some problems in the farmer training means, school running form and training mechanism. It reviews the current models of compulsory education, higher education and vocational education for the new-typed farmer training in China, and of surplus rural labourer transference. And it proposes that the new-typed farmer training in China should have to make scientific plans, improve the agricultural educational system, reinforce related laws and regulations, innovate funds investment system, form farmer evaluation system, increase farmer educational training content and so forth, in the light of foreign farmer training experience for reference.
