Study On The Theory Of Interface Management And Its Application In Large-scale Renovation And Extension Public Projects

With the astonishing development of China's economy and society, more and more renovation and extension public projects are constructed. This type of construction projects is deeply concerned by the building industry because the success or failure of this kind of projects influences the living conditions of people, local economy and the development of society. Since there are several problems associated with traditional construction project management, it can not meet the requirement of large-scale renovation and extension public projects. To aim above aim, this paper studied the theory and its application of project interface management, which is a new management tool, both in theory and in empirical. The main outcomes of this paper are showed as follows:(1) Firstly, this paper did some research on the background and the significance of interface management, then comprehensively reviewed the literature on the interface management at home and abroad, aiming at providing theoretical basis for future research. In this part, the definition and the categories of the public buildings and the public building projects were presented, the characteristics of the public building projects were analyzed and the properties of renovation and extension public projects were studied, aiming at providing project interface analysis and interface management of this type of projects with research basis.(2) Secondly, this paper researched the theory of interface management in renovation and extension public projects. More specifically, this paper investigated the concept of interface and the basic theory of interface management, including the connotation of interface, the macro graphic and the microscopic origins of interface, the characteristic and the categories of interface and the system management theory, the coordination theory, the stakeholder theory and delicacy management theory related with interface management. Then the interface involved in renovation and extension public projects were analyzed and classified into two categories, engineering interfaces and project management interfaces, based on the analysis of interface management theory and the characteristics of this type of projects. It must be mentioned that this paper highlighted the stakeholder theory and then classified the project management interface into two categories, internal stakeholder interface and external stakeholder interface. This paper also put forward a dynamic project interface analysis based on active control method. (3) This paper proposed several management methods of interface management in renovation and extension public projects. The effective management methods to manage interfaces associated with renovation and extension public projects were put forward on the basis of abovementioned analyses, including organization structures with high-efficiency, work process and management procedures of different participants during different stages of renovation and extension public projects and interface management planning using CPM. Then methods to improve the performance of interface management were put forward including a method of project interface management using systematical thinking, coordination mechanism with all stakeholders involved, strengthened contract management and communication methods making best use of information technique.(4) The theory and management methods of interface management was applied to the Renovation and Extension Project of Huanghua Airport International Terminal. The main project interfaces associated with this project were identified and interface management methods were put forward. By applying interface management, the objective of construction without any suspend air service of international flights which was seemed as mission impossible was accomplished, in addition, other values were also attained to some extent, the expectations of different stakeholders were satisfied, then effective control with emphasis was achieved. This project was moved into operation stage and the implement and results of interface management application were also presented to demonstrate the role of interface management.
