In the past few years, with the rapid development of urbanization, China has already stepped into a steady developing stage of urbanization. The direct spatial materialization of urbanization is urban spatial expansion. The urban spatial materialization expansion is the spatial action and direct manifestations of process of urbanization, so it is of great importance to research urban spatial expansion in order that government can formulate urban policy and plan rationally. The paper chooses urban expansion of ChengDu City as its case study. Based on searching《Chengdu City Statistical Yearbook》, collecting other relevant data and doing field research, applying Fractal theory, such as quantitative methods and quantitative description and combination of traditional methods of qualitative, by means of analyzing the spatial dynamic procedure of urban expansion, characters of each stage, the paper discusses model of urban expansion, power mechanism, the existence of the problem and control strategies.(1) Based on the space point of view, the evolution of urban form of Chengdu has obvious spatial variation. In this article, the definition of "economies in transition", the trend of the city's total population, non-agricultural population and population density was the rapid growth and concentrated to the south and west of Wuhou Jinniu District, the main trend of the current population Jinniu District, Wuhou District, Qingyang District west, south of the three focus areas. Chengdu urban area has grown rapidly, especially from 1996-2006, as a result of the main driving force - the living space and industrial land to the south and west of the expansion of growth in the rapid development of built-up areas, in 10 years 187.43% growth rate, but cultivated land also reduced rapidly, the cultivation index of Wuhou region which is located in the southwest side dropped declined 0.07 from 0.39, the cost of urban expansion is a substantial reduction in arable land. The city has developed into three-ring , and gradually developed to the outside three-ring-proliferation, although the rapid development of urban built-up area, the stability of urban form Lower but relatively stable, compact coefficient decreased and the trend of continued higher. By means of analyzing data from the built-up area compared with other elements, we found that the spatial differences of Chengdu morphological changes in urban space depend on the resource endowment and the Liberal Government to promote the produce, and were influenced by the macroeconomic environment and policy significantly.(2) From the time series, the time for urban spatial patterns are very distinct characteristics. In the study period, the space plane patterns such as the urban population distribution, economic development, land productivity and urban built-up area occurred in the larger growth. With year-on-year growth in built-up areas, the urban population gradually diverted from the west and south, urban population centers outward spread of urban areas. Expansion of urban spatial patterns is divided into three different stages of change in the study period evidently, were axial strips were extended development period (1986-1991), Wing leaps and bounds between the filling and development period (1991-1999) and more closely the development of group period (2000-2006) .In addition, macro-economic cycles in different paragraphs, the built-up area, non-agricultural population changes and other factors do not change the same line, with a total to mention that when economic conditions are better the growth are faster and when economic conditions less well-off the growth slower.(3) The process of urbanization in Chengdu exists the relationship of allometric growth. Industrial output and non-agricultural population growth subject to the relationship of allometric growth, indicated that Chengdu still was more in labor-intensive enterprises. Industrial output and built-up area is also subject to the relationship of allometric growth, indicating that along with economic development, urban built-up area is efficiently used of increasingly higher, the fracture part indicates that from 2000 to 2005, the city built-up area relatively over-development. Non-agricultural population and area of built-up area increase algometrically in poor, which means that the city built-up areas and non-agricultural population growth can be impacted more vulnerably by socio-economic policies of the government.Through the evolution of urban spatial structure of the process of analysis, this article concludes with Chengdu, the evolution of urban spatial structure at all stages of the laws and the specific characteristics and mechanism of urban expansion using the latest achievements and promote the scientific nature of planning; the Government to strengthen the control of land; the Government to continue to strengthen the use of urban space three policy recommendations.Through the analysis of the evolution of the process of urban spatial structure of a Chengdu, this article concludes the specific characteristics and mechanism of urban expansion at all stages of the laws: Promote political and economic stage of the evolution of the law, urban form of the law of the expansion of regional differentiation, the rapid evolution of the urban gradient. and concludes three proposal, using mechanism the latest achievements of urban expansion in order to promote the scientific nature of planning; the Government to strengthen the control of land; The government to continue to strengthen the use of urban space .
