While the domestic construction industry develops rapidly, the construction project managers are more attractive than before. The performance of a building company depends on the project manager's capability. However, the statistic result demonstrates that these Chinese project managers are not qualified. Meanwhile, the training of project managers take building companies a large amount of money and do not achieve the expectation.Since the competency model was brought forward, the research about it was developed broadly. It not only got notable achievement in theories, but also has very good verification in practice. In guiding with the researches of competent theory, the construction project managers'training system is built based on the competency characteristic model. And how to promote the construction project managers by training is explored.First of all, why did this research? After read some references, I found there are conflicts between the construction project managers'qualification and the training system. Secondly, based on the theoretical review of the competency theory, competency characteristic model and the training researches on competency characteristic, a questionnaire is designed to perform an investigation about the project manager competency characteristics and the project manager training situation. And then, based on the questionnaire result analysis, a construction project manager competency characteristic model is derived. At last, according to the analysis of the key problems in the project manager training, this article demonstrates a project manager training system building process, and training requirement, design, implementation and evaluation building process. In training requirement evaluation, competency characteristic model is suggested as the criterion and competency characteristic evaluation table is suggested as the training requirement evaluation tool. In training content, a new training method is introduced. It classifies the competency characteristic factors and raises the basic competency characteristic and differential competency characteristic according to each level factors and training difficulty. The paper introduces competency characteristic model into the construction project manager training system. New idea and method are brought forward to improve project manager training practices and benefit the standardization and scientificity of the project manager training.
