According to the particular geography, industry structure, and economy development status in China, railway transportation plays a significant and irreplaceable role in the whole transportation system and economy development. In order to meet the demand of railway transportation for goods and passengers, Chinese government has made a series of strategic investments in the Chinese railway infrastructure since 1990s. Comparing with the figure of 2006, there was a relatively big growth of railway transportation for critical goods in 2007, because of the national macro-control and the supports for economy development and stability. As we know, railway transportation played an exceptional and important role for ensuring the supply of critical goods in emergency situations, such as the Sichuan earthquake and the snowstorm disaster in Southern China.The hitherto measurement of development of railway transportation for goods is based on the calculating the difference of freight volume or goods turnover between two consecutive periods. However, the calculation of stochastic exponential theory and goods turnover is simply the result of adding the different volumes of transported goods in terms of value, nature and quality together. And as we know, in this approach, goods turnover is the sun of freight volume and the product of goods and transportation distance (Units:ton).The shortcoming of this kind of approach is the issue of confounded measurements. By using this approach, it is difficult to articulate and demonstrate the structure of freight amount in terms of good type and its importance in good transportation. Because of this shortcoming, the statistics of development of railway transportation for goods needs to be improved.The present paper will calculate the development speed of railway transportation for goods, by introducing index theory and making a literature review of arithmetic weighted mean index and stochastic approach. This paper consists of six parts.Chapter One: The introduction will discuss the development process of the railway transportation for goods in China as well as its status and role in the whole transportation system. It will be introduced that the research background and potential contributions as well as the content and logical chain of this paper.Chapter Two: Literatures review of index theory. The definition and categorization of index will be introduced in the first place, and then I will discuss and summarize some important approaches of compilation of index in terms of the importance in the development and history of compilation of index. Moreover, I will focus on the discussion of synthetic index and average index and introduce some key approaches of establishment of index worldwide.Chapter Three: Establish arithmetic weighted average index and its implication. In this part, I will explain the reason of choosing arithmetic average mean index and then make a brief introduction of arithmetic average mean index which comprises the content of weight theory, the calculation approach of weight, the setting of base period, and the principles of selecting of representative product. Furthermore, taking into consideration the resource status of Jiangxi Province, the trend of increasing Freight Volume, the category of representative product will be fixed up.Chapter Four: The theory of establishment of stochastic approach. In this part, I will argue the superiority of adopting the approach of compilation of stochastic exponential, because it is difficult to access required information to analyze production index of railway transportation of goods by using traditional approach of compilation of stochastic exponential, and then present the principle of compilation of stochastic exponential and some important factors of establishment of stochastic volume index.Chapter Five: I will design production index of railway transportation of goods in Jiangxi province, according to the theory of compilation of stochastic exponential. The trail calculation of production index of railway transportation of goods in Jiangxi Province will be made. Moreover, the result of this calculation will be identified and evaluated.Chapter Six: General discussion and main contributions. Furthermore, the limitation of this master thesis and implication for future research will be discussed as well.
