SMEs have become an important part of the national economy which is a major driver of China's economic growth. Based on the actual situation of SMEs in China, this study discusses SMEs how to apply flexible innovation models to breakthrough the economic crisis.Through the integration of innovative theory and empirical research, this study concludes several innovation models which are suitable for SMEs to carry out, including various technical innovation models, as well as non-technical innovation models. The whole paper is divided into three sections: theoretical discussion, empirical research and study conclusion.This study has two innovative points. First, this paper makes a detailed analysis of SMEs' own characteristics in order to explore the appropriate innovation models for SMEs to innovate, it also suggests how important for SMEs to apply suitable technical, non-technical innovation models to innovate and develop. Second, this paper introduces non-technical innovation models to the research scope, which is different from the past academic research focusing on technical innovation activities, there're a fruitful non-technical innovation model in SMEs' real innovatiing practice, studying such innovation models has a high practical significance.By empirical analysis of survey datas and in-depth case study, this paper verifies a variety of technical and non-technical innovation models and their impacts on the corporate performance for SMEs. What's more, this paper finds out synergies between technical innovation and non-technical innovation when both kinds of innovation are conducted in one enterprise.
