Research On Market Structure And Market Performance Of Shang Hai Logistics Industry

Nowadays, the development of the logistics industry has become an important sign of city's progress. Owning the well-developed logistics industry is a prerequisite for Shanghai to be classified as international metropolis. Accelerating the development of modern logistics industry is an important support for the construction of Shanghai international economic, financial, trade and shipping center, besides, it can also enhance the overall competitiveness of Shanghai. During the "Eleventh Five-Year" period, we would like to establish Shanghai to be the international logistics hub. By 2010, we hope that modern logistics industry will be the pillar industryMarket structure and market performance are two important aspects of industrial research. To some extent, the market structure determines the strategic choices of logistics enterprises, therefore, the study of market structure and market performance of logistics industry of Shanghai has both academic and practical significance for the development of logistics industry in Shanghai and the realization of "Eleventh Five-Year" goal.In order to reveal the problems existing in logistics industry of Shanghai and to find the solutions, I use U.S. economist Brain's SCP theoretical framework of industrial organization to study the market structure and market performance of Shang Hai's logistics. In this paper, I collected, arranged and calculated a large amount of data to deeply analyze the market structure of logistic industry of Shang Hai from 3 aspects namely market concentration, market barriers and product differentiation. I spelt out that a low concentration, small economies of scale, low entry barriers, high exit barriers, as well as the unconspicuous product differentiation are present situation of Logistic Industry of Shang Hai. So I give the conclusion that logistics industry of Shanghai still belong to the atomistic market structure.In the market performance aspect, this paper use DEA models and Matlab software to analyze all the indicators of 15 sample companies and found that only five companies are efficient. Overall, market performance of logistic industry of Shang Hai is not satisfactory. Beside, this paper use panel data method to empirically research that low level of market performance is due to imperfect market structure.In addition, I also compared the market structure and maket performance of logistic industry between Shanghai and Hong Kong's logistics industry, pointing out that Hong Kong's achievements in this area and the inadequacy of Shanghai. We hope that Shang Hai could learn from Hong Kong's logistics development model, learn from HongKong's strong points and close the gap. Finally, I put forward my own comments and suggestions on strategic choice for the logistics enterprises and the future development of logistics industry of Shanghai from the three main aspect of market structure.
