These years, the theories of indigenous innovation have been the focus of the whole society, from the state to the enterprise to the scholar. And researches point out that developing countries need it more and should put it to the level of national strategy. However, most areas which realize innovation breakthrough in China are of simple-technology and large-scale production rather than high technology industries such as semiconductors, automobiles. But the telecommunication equipments industry is a success exception, which develops from imitation and catching-up to indigenous innovation and leapfrogging in just three decades. Meanwhile, the choice of innovation models from the strategic level can largely determine the performance of one company. Consequently, the factors which affecting the choice of indigenous innovation models in telecommunication equipments industry are studied.First of all, from the technology developing path point of view, literatures on indigenous innovation models and their influencing factors are discussed. Then, the development process and the innovation characteristics are studied at the industry level. And at the enterprise level, Huawei,UT Starcom and the East communications, taken as the typical example of technological leapfrogging, disruptive innovation and upgrading in value chain respectively, have been studied deeply with multi-case study methods. As a result, the key factors affecting the choice of indigenous innovation models have been concluded to five aspects: technology, marketing, strategy, resource integration and entrepreneurial spirit. Finally, a questionnaire is designed according case study and literature research, and the results are analyzed useing binary logistic regression method. It shows that the choice of the indigenous innovation models are affected significantly by followed factors: technological capability, technological forecasting capability, the capability of finding out customers' potential demand, the speed of responding to marketing changes, differentiated marketing position capability, explicit strategic intention capability, the attitude of enterprise to the technology and customers' unique demand.
