Economic globalization and regional economic integration are the two major trends of the world's economic development. In this context, the economic connection between various countries is becoming closer and closer, and the international competitiveness is also becoming fiercer and fiercer. How to enhance the international competitiveness of individual countries is the important issue which can not be avoided nowadays.After World War II, Japan has created an economic miracle, and became the second strongest country in the world. Throughout the development of the Japanese economy, the foreign trade has played a huge role in the course of enhancing international competitiveness. Foreign trade structure means the production organization that a country participates in international division of labor. Improving trade structure or not, decides the competitive position of a country in the international market, affects the enhancement of international competitiveness, as far as Japan of small domestic market and lack of resources is concerned, the changes of foreign trade structure has affected the enhancement of international competitiveness directly. That is, Japan's economic development has accompanied the course of the changes of foreign trade structure and enhancement of international competitiveness.The theories I used in this paper are international trade theory and international competitiveness theory, the methods are the combination of qualitative and quantitative analysis, the combination of empirical and normative analysis. On the basis of the theories of various domestic and foreign scholars, I have analyzed Japan's trade structure and international competitiveness deeply. After World War II, Japan's trade structure has shown the features as follows:export structure has varied from labor-intensive products, capital-intensive products to technology-intensive products; import structure has varied from raw materials, fossil fuels and other primary products to industrial products; regional structure has varied from America to Asia. In this paper, the change of Japan's industrial structure, adjustment of Japan's industrial policy, the yen appreciation, technological progress, the oil crisis and (?) frictions are the key factors influencing Japan's trade structure. And, by enhancing market share, matching market-oriented, optimizing factors and changing balance of foreign trade, improving terms of trade, the changes of Japan's foreign trade structure have promoted industrial international competitiveness. That is, the changes of Japan's trade structure have played a positive role in enhancing Japan's international competitiveness.We have got useful lessons from the changes of Japan's trade structure and the enhancement international competitiveness. That is, speeding up technological progress and innovation, optimizing the industrial structure and trade structure, increasing the added value of exports and actively exploring the international market, so as to enhance China's international competitiveness.
