Terrain Visualizition, as one of the hot topics of Computer Graphics, GeographicInformation System, Virtual Reality and Digital Photogrammetry, is receivingincreasingly attention in recent years. In this paper, based on the principles of DigitalPhotogrammetry and Computer Graphics, the key technology of 3D terrainvisulization on PC platform is discussed and some of the key problems of using terrainvisualization technique for utility are solved. The achievements of this thesis can besummarized as fOllows:Present a simple description of DTM(Digital Terrain Model) and the technology ofterrain modeling with reguIar and irregular terrain data. Using self adaptive blockedmethod, a fast and efficient way of constructing TIN(Triangulared Irregular Networks) isrealized. The quick interPolation of regular grid.is realizedBased on the principles of photogrammetry and the characteristics of remote..sensing images data, introduced the DLT and polynominal models which were used inthe accurate registration of image data and terrain data. It will ensure the data source fOrgenerating high1y reaIistic terrain model.Successfully solved a series of problems brought by the high detail textureinformation of remoting sensing images. Using the display list technology of OpenGL,realized the mapping of 1arge quantity of image texture, realized the seamless mosaic ofblocked texture with tiling technology. By controlling of perspective matrix, developingthe technology of saving large region 3D terrain map with high resolution.Introduced the method of image processing into terrain simplification, realized thewavelet-based data simplification and tbature point extraction. With the concept ofconstricted quadtree, realized the terrain modeI's multi-resolution description.Based on the research and aimed at utility, a terrain rendering system on PCplatform named ReSDISS-3D is developed, solved some of the problems in 3D terrainv isu1 ization.
