Abstract 1:1000000, 1:250000 and 1:50000 spatial database is the important data for national fundamental geographic information system. Spatial database is composed of vector topographic database, digital raster graphics database, digital elevation model, digital orthophoto database and meta-database etc. Transprotation database is a sub-database of vector topogrphic database. There are many method of obtaining transportation data. Besides traditional surveying and mapping, there are Globle Positioning System method, Space Remote sensing method, full digital photogrammetry method and digitizing topographic map method etc. The experimentation prove that there are more adventages for GPS method than for the orther methods. The advantages are faster obtaining data speed, better accuracy, much convenient, well-suited and lower cost. As the same time, we have the experimentation for building database. Geostar is a appropriate software for transprotation database in database management and maintence. All in all, the experimentation give a total solution for building national transprotation database.
