Virtual Terrain Environment (VTE) is a three-dimension, interactive and real-time terrain scene. It is constructed based on digital map utilizing VR technology and used to describe the surface of earth and its correspondent phenomena. In this field, constructing rational models is pivotal to establish virtual terrain environment, and crucial to render virtual scene real-time, depict terrain environment realistically, and realize some functions of analysis in the virtual terrain environment.In this paper, the penman investigates the principles and methods of three-dimension terrain model in the virtual terrain environment, and summarizes the important ideology of the formers in this field. What the penman' s work is as follows:1. summarizing the methods of relief modeling, discussing the strategies of multi-resolution relief model. In this course, the penman places the emphasis on the method of weighted average, incremental inserting, and restricted quadtree.2. On the basis of relief model, the penman investigates how to inosculate other special information, and discuss the building models, the tree models, and the road models respectively.3. summarizing the present methods of acceleratedly rendering and placing emphasis on the Binary Space Partitioning(BSP) Tree.4. In the finality of the paper, the penman summarizes the process of implementing the software with the technology of software engineering, and uses the UML to model demanding-analysis, generally-designing, and detailedly-designing.
