The main purpose of inventory is to balance the production, to against variousdemand uncertainty as well as to obtain the benefit of scale economics. Inventorymanagement is very important to enterprises and it has great effect on enterprises' profit. In the more and more competitive market environment, the recycle of product is shorterthan before, so inventory management becomes much more important than before, especially for popular, defective items and those with short life cycle. The newsboyproblem is one of the classical sing-period inventory management models, which attractsmany academic researchers for a very long time, and many important results are obtained. The newsboy problem model also increasingly develops with the transformation of theproduction management styles. In this thesis, we consider the inventory control problem of single-period productitems with a fixed life cycle and short marketing period. Our study expands the classicalnewsboy problem to consider defective items and returning policy. The single-periodmodel is established, and the optimal order quantity is derived for cases when the expectprofit model in the supplier and the retailer operate independently as well ascollaboratively. Then numerical examples and sensitivity analysis are carried out toillustrate the application of the model. Research results show that the profit of them undercollaboration is bigger than independence respectively.
