In the development of geographic information system(GIS),the volume of spatial data keeps growing rapidly, along with the continuous emergence of multi-format, multi-scale spatial data.A good organization and management of massive data is of particular importance to the performance of the GIS.With the organization of spatial data rationalized,it can not only improve the efficiency of GIS,but also significantly reduce the future maintenance work. Therefore, the study on the design of the spatial database, the organization and management of the spatial data remains an important topic, and also a meaningful work in the research of GIS.In this study, various types of military spatial data with different scales were used as the research models.Starting with the basic concepts of spatial database and spatial data model,a comparative analysis of the Oracle Spatial data engine with other database solutions was performed to comprehend the similarities & differences, advantages & disadvantages of different solutions.Due to the characteristics of the Association of South East Asian Nations(ASEAN) spatial data,a combination of Oracle data platform and ArcSDE spatial data engine was chosen as the spatial database solution.By means of the concept design, logic design and physical design, the ASEAN spatial data system was successfully constructed. In the following work, the optimization and maintenance of the database, especially the backup and recovery of the database, were discussed in detail. The established database has been well applied in practice.A client-faced military spatial data information subsystem was developed, through which the application of the database, mainly including the data query and browse, the generation of statistic data images and orientation superposition display, could be realized.
