Since the origin of tufted carpet technology in the early years of the 1840’s, this kind of carpet has quickly captured the market for its variety pattern. Now, it’s the most widely used carpet in the world. In the tufted carpet jacquard system, electromagnetic clutch is one of the most executive components. By means of controlling the speed of clutch, different pile heights are formed with adjusting amount of feeding yarn. In recent years, higher electromagnetic clutch requirements about power consumption and dynamic characteristic are proposed in the tufted carpet jacquard system. Focusing on the problems above, this paper researches about the electromagnetic clutch and shows an improved control method.(1)This paper analyzed the structure, principles, dynamic characteristics and power consumption of the electromagnetic clutch. The shortcomings and deficiencies are pointed out according to the actual production at present:slow response speed and high power consumption in the holding stage. For these reasons, the life time of electromagnetic clutch becomes shorter, energy consumption increased and the production cost is higher.(2)The mathematical model of electromagnetic clutch is modeled by two methods. One is FET, the magnetic field distribution can be seen intuitively by solving the partial differential equations of electromagnetic theory in the Ansys software. The numerical relations among the electromagnetic force, the gap size and the current are found and the fit surface of them is created. Therefore, in order to meet electromagnetic clutch’s working requirement, it’s necessary to choose an appropriate current value. The other is by the method of differential equation. Current variation can be solved exactly by measuring the parameters of electromagnetic clutch. Then the feasibility of PWM is discussed. Through the two clutch models above, theoretical basis is provided to improve the dynamic characteristics and lower the power consumption of the electromagnetic clutch.(3)The improved control method with PWM is verified by experiment. Results show that the method is effective and reliable. The attract speed is quicker and power consumption is lower. The following conclusions are generalized:The pulling speed of the clutch can be accelerated by table look-up scheme. By adjusting the duty-cycle of the pulse to maintain the current size of the clutch, appropriate electromagnetic force is generated which can meet the combined status and reduce power consumption. Suitable changing the first turn-off time of the switch circuit can shorten the adjustment time while ensuring that the electromagnetic clutch is closing. Appropriate choice of the frequency of pulse can reduce interference and current fluctuation. The cost of control production can be reduced at the same time. Through the theory and experiment above, the problem of inaccurate circle height control in the tufted carpet jacquard system is fixed. The power consumption is lower so that cost of production reduced. And the quality of carpet products is improved at the same time. The intended purpose is achieved at last.
