Faced with the shortage of petroleum, the worsening environmental pollution as well as the increasing implication of automobile, different countries are positively exploring and developing clean and renewable substitution fuels for automobile. Among alternate fuels, biodiesel's properties are most similar to that of diesel, and it is renewable, clean as well as safe, thus it is being widely noticed. Currently, abundant experimental and applied researches on diesel engine fuelled on diesel have been carried out. Our territory is vast with great difference in the local altitudes, and the plateau occupies above 65%. Therefore, it is comparatively important for us to research and explore each performance of diesel engine fuelled biodiesel and find out influence factors at different altitudes, especially under the plateau environment.This research firstly measured the main physical and chemical parameters of biodiesel, analyzed their difference when compared with that of diesel. According to the related national standards, experiments concerning performance, smoke emission and noise level were carried out under three atmospheric pressures (81kPa,90kPa and 101kPa)respectively, when the diesel engine fuelled with 0# diesel(BO), pure biodiesel(B100) and blended fuels with different mixed ratios. In addition, the emission test has been carried out on a turbocharged diesel engine which respectively fuelled with B10,B20,B30 and B100. Comparable erosion tests were carried out on diesel engine fuelled with diesel and biodiesel by using the hard spectrum technology. Biodiesel's corrosion affects on diesel engine was investigated and its formation mechanism was analyzed.The result showed that, with the increase of biodiesel mixed ratio, torque output inceased firstly and then decreased, brake specific fuel consumption decreased firstly and then inceased, brake thermal efficiency inceased firstly and then decreased and came back finally, compared with diesel when engine at full load; With the increase of load, B100's noise power was less than B0, for the same rotate speed, noise power decreased generally with the increase of biodiesel mixed ratio when engine at full load; Blended fuel's CO emission decreased generally at full load for middle and low rotate speeds; B100's NOx emission was the same as B0, but, blended fuel's NOx was less than BO for the most rotate speeds when engine at full load; Smoke emission of biodiesel decreased evidently when compared with diesel. At the same time, biodiesel can cause wear and tear corrosion due to its oxygen element, multiple acidity, glycerin, etc.
