As a common water-soluble polymer, polyacrylamide (PAM) is extensively used in several industries, such as oil extraction, water treatment, paper-making and mining. We were commissioned to reproduce the product which has good stability, solubility and function, in order to meet the needs of quality standard.First, cationic PAM was made by aqueous dispersion polymerization using polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as stabilizer and ammonium persulfate (APS)-sodium bisulfate (SHS) as initiator, and was characterized by FT-IR, Ubbelohde viscometer and Rotational viscometer methods. The influences of the factors on intrinsic viscosity and stability of PAM, such as the amount of disperants, the composition and concentration of monomer, the concentration of ammonium sulfate, initiator concentration and reaction temperature, were studied. However, the stability of product is not very good.Second, stable aqueous dispersions of PAM was synthesized using some cationic polymer with good solubility as dispersant and azo-compounds (V50) as initiator, and was characterized by FT-IR, Ubbelohde viscometer and Rotational viscometer methods as well as the first part. The effects of varying factors, such as the molecular weight and concentration of dispersant, the molar ratios and concentration of monomer, the concentration of ammonium sulfate, initiator concentration and reaction temperature, were also studied. The intrinsic viscosity and infrared spectrogram are very similar to the factory's sample. The mining wastewater from one factory was taked as simulation wastewater. The contrast experiment of flocculating properties between the two home-made products with the intrinsic viscosity of 4.6dL/g and 3.8dL/g respectively and the manufacturer sample is made, and the visible UV spectrophotometer is utilized to measure its supernatant transmittance. The results showed that the home-made one with the intrinsic viscosity of 4.6dL/g has the similar effect with the sample made by the manufacturer. The samples of lab trial were sent to this factory and then it was waiting for the the pilot subject to further amplification test.
