Thermal conductivity performance of materials is mainly represented through coefficient of thermal conductivity which is related to materials application in various fields, in the space, energy, materials, and microelectronics and computer technology along with the delivery of energy in the material; it is more concern for people about the measurement scales of the objects, namely, the exact value of coefficient of thermal conductivity. Thermal-physical property measurement technology and measurement theory has become the focus of nationals concern, the new testing technologies and test theories become more perfect. Currently, the testing process of coefficient of thermal conductivity and coefficient of thermal diffusivity of these materials at home and abroad, which is commonly used by guarded hot plate steady state method, the test cycle is long, especially for testing insulation materials, thermal effects due to temperature sensors and test representative sampling requirements, making the sample must be greater than 200mm diameter or more, so causing a longer test cycle, and the large test systems, making test samples complexly. In addition, different forms and materials of different thermo-physical properties generally require different testing methods and tools for characterization. There is little coverage as possible for a testing method of thermal-physical properties from metal to nonmetal, liquid, gas and solid-like materials.Transient Plane Source Method (TPS) is a patented technology that is developed on the basis of hotline means by Professor Silas Gustafsson, Sweden Chalmer University of Technology, which can be used for solids, powders, liquids, coatings, thin films, and the determination of anisotropic materials. In the past 20 years, Transient plane source Method (TPS) is increasingly being used for the testing of a variety of different types of thermal properties by researchers. This article is a detailed introduction to testing principle of TPS technology, using TPS technology to test the common materials, including metals, inorganic materials, polymer materials, thin films and liquids, studying the effects of the environmental conditions, plant factors and their characteristics of the material on the test results. These studies lay a good foundation in order to draw up national standard of testing of materials thermal performance through TPS method.
