China is a major exporter of wooden furniture. Compared to other forest products, both carbon emissions and carbon intensity of wooden furniture are at a high level. With the maturing carbon footprint accounting standards promulgated, carbon barriers would very likely to be a new green trade barriers. However, eco-design, as a design method based on life-cycle perspective, can solve various environmental problems and reduce the carbon footprint of wooden furniture, and become a strong response to the challenge of global warming and trade barriers. In this paper, the advantages of the three international product carbon footprint accounting standards were integrated into a composite accounting method to assess the carbon footprint. A multi-functional furniture was the benchmark of the improved designs which were developed based on principles of ecological design. Then emission reduction of different connectors, different usage scenarios of recycled material, and different function scenarios were compared between four furniture of which panel were made different materials. Furthermore, effect on carbon footprint of furniture from raw materials trade patterns and power supply were analyzed. This paper comprehensively provides a scientific basis and decision support for eco-design and carbon emissions reduction of wooden furniture. The study found that:Carbon footprint of benchmarking four furniture can be listed in descending order:Slit plate furniture, jointed board furniture, veneer board furniture and melamine board furniture. Sawn timber, MDF, paint, painting and sanding are the main sources of carbon emissions. Using no glue connecting structure compared to the connection structure with adhesive, can reduce emissions 77% to 96%. Using recycled wood compared to original wood, can reduce emissions by 3.9%~35.1%. Using a multi-functions furniture compared to a set of single-function furniture can reduce emissions by 9.8%~56.7%. The average carbon footprint of different trade patterns from small to large order are:the American pattern< Central European pattern<global pattern<Nordic pattern. Compared to the baseline scenario, emission reduction of different patterns are 1%~30.2%. Using different regional grid electricity, carbon footprint ascending order is Central China grid<Southern grid<Hainan grid <Northwest grid<national average grid<East China Grid<North China Grid<Northeast Grid. Benchmarking using other regional grid electricity with Northeast grid electricity, carbon emission reduce 4%~32%. Furniture carbon footprint will reduce by 8.5%~12%in 2020 and drop 12%~19%in 2050 again.
