The New CAK3665 which was upgraded from CAK3665 machine tool included some improvements. In the paper the machine was divided into several parts by means of the modular design:lathe bed, spindles, saddle, two-axle parts and chuck parts, etc. After making a product analysis and market investigation, the product performance parameters and structures were redesigned to build three dimensional models of the components. Then the component models were in the process of virtual assembly, after which the virtual assembly model of the whole machine tool was completed. When the model was set up, static and dynamic simulation was conducted. According to the simulation results, the interference components in the model were modified to obtain the three dimensional models with the least problems.Modal analysis technology was usually adopted when considering the machine dynamic performance. Firstly, the machine tool was divided into skateboard, saddle, bed and other major components. Secondly a series of differential equations were established according to the substructures. Finally, the dynamic response relationships of all components could be obtained. Using the displacement and force equilibrium conditions of all the substructures, the characteristics could be integrated to achieve the overall characteristics of substructures. This paper proposed the methodology on modal analysis and static stress deformation process of the bed model with the software ANSYS which was for finite element analysis. Before imported to the software ANSYS, the research model was modified in the Pro/Engineer. Based on the simulation results, the dynamic performance of the whole machine tool would be worse if there were components with poor dynamic characteristics in the substructures. In addition, the factors that affected the overall accuracy and analysis of structural characteristics of the machine tool also included the design parameters and rigidity of the connecting parts.With the digital virtual simulation technology on the New CAK3665 machine tool, the following conclusions could be drawn:(1) The three dimensional virtual design had great superiority over two dimensional design. In order to avoid problems in the design process, it was necessary to utilize computer simulation technology, and make digital model for the machine tool products. After that, assembly was carried out to complete the interference inspection in the virtual environment, and then we can validly evaluate the rationality of the design. Virtual design could effectively reduce the costs of design and manufacture, and greatly shorten the development cycle in the engineering application. (2) The dynamic performance parameters of the main parts were obtained based on the dynamic analysis of machine tools as well as the machine tool dynamic principle. According to the dynamic optimization design methods, the machine tool beds were optimized to improve the dynamic performance.(3) The three dimensional virtual simulation design theory and analysis method applied in this paper were widely used not only within the machine tool industry but also in other fields of engineering design. Therefore, the design theory, analysis method and research results of this paper had an extensive engineering significance.
