The development history of Chinese costume has been directly or indirectly affected and dominated by the social environment. Meanwhile, every social change promotes the change of costume. From sociological perspective of gender, social stratification and consumption culture, this article discusses on the changes of Chinese costume since the 1970 s, and tries to analyze the diversity of social attributes of clothing. With the changing of people’s social gender consciousness by social transformation, people get profound understanding between "asexual" to gender different dress, thus calling for the return of femininity, masculinity, and advocate of neutral garment by themselves. The reconstruction of the social hierarchy makes people seeking common ground between the social hierarchy, instead pursuing the unified simple and unaffected, prompting the changing of fashion. From keening on “old and shabby beauty” to blindly chasing newfangled of clothing, until the diversity of choice, the culture of consumption’s changing promoted the fashion evolution, which evolved from “old and shabby beauty” to individuation, humanity and symbolization. Thus it will provide more theoretical basis for the study of the future of Chinese clothing, and be conductive to the progress of the apparel industry.
