With people’s concern on the drinking water safety and environmental health risk,recently the pollution of the traditional Chinese medicine processing waste water get more and more attention. The toxic pollutants of waste water which discharges into the environment will threat environmental ecosystem and drinking water safety.However, domestic and overseas researches on the biological toxicity of the traditional Chinese medicine waste water are relatively scarce. And researches on the recognition of the toxicity pollutants in traditional Chinese medicine waste water are insufficient. Therefore, it is essential to analyze the biological toxicity of the traditional Chinese medicine waste water.In this paper, general characteristics and biological toxicity characteristics of waste water which were taken from Shiyan in Hubei were analyzed. By studying the factors which influence the detection of the biological toxicity with luminous bacteria,suitable plan was established. At last toxic pollutants in waste water was monitored.The scientific reference could be offered to subsequent biological toxicity research,ecosystem risk and human health risk management of Chinese medicine waste water.The research indicated that, the quality of Chinese medicine waste water was very complex. The water’s pollution characteristics were related to manufacturing procedure, extraction means and the medicine breed. The toxicity of the salvia miltiorrhiza and radix isatidis processing waste water was high, which was from water-deposition and alcohol-deposition. The toxicity of the water using for washing medicine was low. The biological toxicity level of the Chinese medicine waste water decreased with the waste water concentration decreasing. When the concentration decreased to 12.5% of the original one of the waste water, the biological toxicity decreased to low toxicity level.Research on the method of biological toxicity analysis showed that the suitable conditions of the luminous bacteria detection were p H in 6~7.5, temperature15℃ or25℃, exposure time 30 min. Test results indicated that RSD of the detection results under the optimized experiment conditions was less than that under reference conditions. And it proved that biological toxicity detection with the optimized conditions was the suitable method to detect the Chinese medicine waste water bio-toxicity using luminous bacteria.The recognition of toxic pollutants in Chinese medicine waste water was discerned by two ways. One was toxic ingredient in Chinese medicine, the other one was pollutants in Chinese medicine waste water. The results indicated that there was no inevitable relation between the toxic ingredient of Chinese medicine and the toxic substances in the waste water. The toxic substances in the waste water were main halogenated hydrocarbon fat, monocyclic aromatic compounds, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and plasticisers, also included some toxic ingredient in Chinese medicine.In the above research, Chinese medicine waste water pollution characteristics was analyzed, biological toxicity detection method was established, and tentative exploration of the toxic pollutants discernment was studied.
