In this paper, the widespread, low cost and environmental friendly azodicarbonamide (ADC) gas-generating agents is investigated as a fuel with the low moisture absorption basic cupric nitrate (BCN). The thermal decomposition and combustion properties are carried out on five different oxygen balance (-10,-5,0,+5,+10) of ADC/BCN gas-generating agents. In order to obtain a low burning temperature and clean gases of gas-generating agents, the four transition metal oxides (CuO, ZnO, MnO2, Fe2O3) are introduced. The thermal decomposition properties are studied by TG-DSC. The results show that the onset reaction temperatures of ADC/BCN mixture were lower than that of pure ADC and BCN. The thermal decomposition reaction of ADC/BCN mixture could be divided into two stages and the thermal decomposition process of ADC/BCN/MOx mixtures are similar to that of ADC/BCN, while the peak temperature and the peak size are slightly different. The combustion heat and burning temperature of samples have been studied by the automatic calorimeter and thermocouple method. The results show that with the increasing of BCN, the combustion heat and burning temperature are all reduced. The maximum combustion heat is 2109.5kJ/kg, while the minimum value is 1489.5kJ/kg. When the oxygen balance is -5, the highest burning temperature is 880℃; and the oxygen balance is +10, the burning temperature is the lowest, with the temperature of 760℃. In adding to MnO2, the CuO、ZnO、Fe2O3 are all helpful for reduce the combustion heat and burning temperature of ADC/BCN. The evolved toxic gases analysis results show that the toxic gases content of CO and NOx increase with the oxygen balance. When the OB is -5, it has the lowest values, which is 9890 and 550ppm seperately. CuO, ZnO and MnO2 can significantly reduce the amount of CO, while the mount of NOx increase. The closed bomb test results show that the average value of preesure rise rate of ADC/BCN/CuO is the largest, and CuO can reduce the ignition delay time of ADC/BCN gas-generating agents. In short, the combustion heat (1900.5kJ/kg) and burning temperature (735℃) of ADC/BCN/CuO mixtures have a relatively lower values, and the toxic gas content of CO is the lowest (8390ppm), so it is an ideal selection for the gas-generating agents.
