As the core part of screw compressor, screw rotor are widely applied in various industrial fields. The finish machining often used form grinding method. With the development of mechanical manufacturing, screw compressor becomes larger and larger in mining, construction, aviation and other fields, so the screw rotor matched becomes larger and lager, the form grinding of larger helical surface will be increasing the grinding area, the grinding force, the size of machine, the motor load and so on, the machining precision of the rotor will be affected.To achieve the precision, intelligent manufacturing of the large screw rotor, this paper puts forward the theory of section grinding of the large screw rotor based on the principle of helical surface envelope machining, the main research content is as follows:1. This paper researched the feasibility and method of realizing the large screw rotor’s section grinding on the existing equipment. In view of the space envelope movement that grinding wheel processing screw rotor, established a tool path calculation model of the wheel, get the wheel tool path when the rotor is section grinding through calculation.2. This paper pretreated the rotor profile through the accumulative chord three times parameters sample. In the section-grinding processing of rotor, it chosen the reasonable step of section-grinding according to the requirement of machining accuracy.3. In order to avoid the interference problem which may come up in the helical surface envelope processing, the paper analyzed, chosen and decided the parameters of the grinding wheel’s installation angle, the axial eccentricity and the geometry size of wheel, eliminated the occurrence of interference, met the requirement of rotor’s section-grinding.4. Using the virtual simulation technology, the feasibility of the rotor’s section-grinding was verified, and the tool path of the wheel calculated by theoretical mode was verified through simulation machining based on VERICUT, that provided the basis for cutting test and saved the test cost.To realizing the intelligent processing of large rotor’s section-grinding, the paper developed a set of calculation software for screw rotor’s section-grinding, it can output the NC machining code of the rotor’s section-grinding through parameterized input.
