Alkylphenol ethoxylates (APEOs) are a kind of nonionic surfactant, they can be widelyused in every industry for their good performance of wettability, emulsification, dispersion andsolubilization. they were degraded into destructive products with the characteristics of ecologicaltoxicity, bioaccumulation and oestrogen in the environment, attracting much attention ofinternational community, disabled and limited in the global. There are problems with most of thequantitative detections for APEOs, such as great errors, serious disturbance and expensiveequipment, which brought influences on our import and export trade. Therefore, to study thedetection method of APEOs will exert active influence on the technique vallation by Europe andthe improvement of product quality. This dissertation explored the separation technology of APEOs, conducted quantitativestudy on them by reversed-phase chromatography, normal-phase chromatography and fakereversed-phase chromatography, the error caused by the three separation modes was analysedquantitatively. The correction factors on the diode array detector, refractive index detector andevaporative light scattering detector was also investigated. The relationship between thecorrection factors and the polymerization degrees of APEOs was researched. In this dissertation, the application of detectors in the quantitative aspect was investigated. Determination of APEOsin the down and feather products by the refractive index detector was established, and therecovery and precision were evaluated. In order to determine the polymerization degree ofAPEOs, a new determination method was established, in which detectors were used in series. The results showed that normal-phase chromatography and fake reversed-phasechromatography separated APEOs according to its degrees, while reversed-phasechromatography separated APEOs according to its alkyl carbon numbers. If APEOs with thedifferent polymerization degrees and the same alkyl chains, the elution of APEOs will appearone peak in reversed-phase chromatography. The moore correction factors on the diode arraydetector was proved similar, while the mass correction factors on the refractive index detector orevaporative light scattering detector was proved similar. The method which used to determineAPEOs in the the down and feather products was proved to be fast and simple, accuratequantitative and good repeatability, the recovery was founded to be in the range of86.35%-107.07%, and the RSD is less than7%. When detectors were used in series to determinethe degree of polymerization of APEOs, the relative standard deviation (RSD) and average relative error were less than6%. This method is suitable for the determination of averagepolymerization degree of APEOs in the practical mixture samples.
