The recycle of waste radial tire and the utilization of ground tire rubber (GTR) have got attention of the countries all over the world. GTR without modification being incorporated into the rubber compound will reduce the physical and mechanical properties of rubber compound. Desulfurization is one of the main instruments for modification. Ultra-high pressure water jet technology was applied to recycle waste radial tire in the paper, the tread rubber was broken into partials with the use of water jet impact action. Compared with other grinding method, water jet process is simple, no secondary pollution, and the GTR can achieve partial desulfurization.The cavitation of jet was simulated by means of FLUENT software, combined with the microstructure of tread rubber caused by water jet, the effects of cavitation in supplementary smash of tire rubber was studied. And characterizing the degree of desulfurization by the gel fraction, the desulfurization effect of GTR was analyzed. Scanning electron microscopy(SEM), infrared spectra(IR), differential scanning calorimetry(DSC) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were used to elaborate the cavitation desulfurization mechanism, and then the effects of different process parameters on the desulfurization of GTR were studyed, and finally Design-Expert software was adopped to optimize the process parameters of jet, fit the experimental data, establish the response surface model, and get the optimal process parameters of desulfurization for water jet method.The results indicated that, the local area of rubber materials showed obvious impact embrittlement phenomenon under the cavitation damage, the effects of cavitation made the cross-linked network of rubber structure fracture, and realized powder desulfurization, and the best desulfurization effect of GTR was at the jet pressure of180MPa, the target distance of21mm, the moving speed of1500mm/min, gel fraction reduced to82.80%.
