The phase change material (PCM) has been applied as a kind of new-style material in many fields due to the world’s energy scarcity. The most widely used PCM is the solid-liquid one. Leakage of liquid is usual during use and the transportation and storage is difficult. To solve this, researchers used a method to prepare shape-stabilized PCM. The shape-stabilized PCM burns easily because it is composed of organic compounds, which limits its applications. The improvement of flame retardancy, therefore, has to been the focus in the research of PCM.In this study, the solid paraffin wax (paraffin) was selected as thermal energy storage PCM, and polypropylene (PP) as the support material, to prepare the paraffin/PP PCM by means of melt blending, the PCM’s maximum dosage of 50% could be determined by measuring the weight change after heating. Then APP/CFA intumescent flame retardant system was introduced in to prepare the at the PCM’s dosage of 30%. The measurement results showed that the crystallization temperature of fire-retardant shape-stabilized PCM is similar to that of paraffin, and there is little difference between the phase change latent heat and its theoretical value. The flame resistant properties of PCM had been improved significantly and the thermostability was fine when the APP/CFA content reached 30%.The paraffin wax and liquid paraffin (mineral oil) were blended through ultrasonic vibration in different ratio, the results of temperature curve for step cooling and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) showed that, the phase transition temperature was the lowest and closer to room temperature, the latent heat of phase change changed little, and phase transformation properties were stable when the ratio were 1:1. The result of fourier transform infrared spectroscopy showed that there were only physical changes in them and no obvious chemical changes happened.The PCM’s ratio of solid and liquid paraffin wax was 1:1, APP/CFA intumescent flame retardant was introduced in to prepare the fire-retardant shape-stabilized PCM. The cone calorimeter (CONE) was used to research the flame retardancy of PCM at different ratio, resulr showed that the material could achieve a UL-94 V-0 rating when the total content of flame retardancy was 35%. The peak heat release rate (PHRR), total heat release (THR), smoke produce rate (SPR) and the release rate of the material decreased while the fire retardancy increased, the material had good fire retarding effect.
