With the fierce competition of steel market, the customer request strict of the plate accuracy. For the steel-making company improving the accuracy of product is the best way improve their Competitive power and control their process cost. Many of Enterprise and research institution around the world are put more attention on research of plate thickness control system, especially these years many of Advanced Process Control principle are put in to thickness control,and made success. Baosteel’s 5m heavy plate mill, which represents the advanced level of the same kind of machines in the world, put into operation on March,2005. Siemens TDC series controller with fast response, high control accuracy advantage is used in the stand control system. But inside the traditional PI controller are being used for thickness control, and on the produce process many of imperfection are arisen, such as lower product accuracy, bad profile and so on.In view of this situation, we research the knowledge of rolling technology in-depth, and combine with fuzzy control theory and TDC system of Siemens. And try to design a fuzzy self-tuning PI controller for mill thickness control system, and test it with PDA tools. For the imperfection of the original software, first we research the software then try optimize it and evaluate the effect.finally we solved the problem which existed in the original system and increased thickness control precision substantially.Through carrying out this topic, it effectively improved the system stability, control level and product quality. Simultaneously this topic’s research results have great significance on technology promotion value and economic efficiency value.
