Electric drive dump trucks are widely used in opencast material handling of large construction sites. Ultra-high-power engines provide power source for the special vehicle. As one of the key technologies of the engine supplement, the design of the cooling system would guarantee the electric drive dump truck’s running cost-efficience. In this paper, the overall design of the 170 T electric drive dump truck’s engine supplement and the key technology of cooling system are researched.1. In accordance with the vehicle operating conditions and performance requirements, It determines the 170 T electric drive dump truck engine of Cummins K2000 E, with rated power 1492kW(@ 1900rpm) by comparative analysis with the same type of products and power matching calculations. Then It designs the outline structure of the engine supplement.2. According to the engine cooling requirements, It matches the cooling fan, calculates both the high and low temperatures cooling circuit, and designs the copper pipe radiators with high and low temperature in parallel, which is highly adaptable.3. Based on the experiments with the engine installed, it improves the inlet pipe connection, the structural designs of cooling fan shroud and the anti-hot air reflow. After the optimization, the engine supplement is more reliable and economy.4. The calculations of theoretical analysis and experimental verification results show that the engine’s overall program and the key technology research of engine cooling system presented in this paper implemented the 170 T electric drive dump truck powerful, reliable, economical and reasonable, programs, practical and feasible.
