Copper is an important raw material, which mainly has been produced by dry metallurgy at present. Along with the development of new flush smelting technology in industry, the quality of copper concentrates become more important. The flush smelting technology requires copper content of smelling feed be high and gauge content of it be low. So, how to effectively separate chalcopyrite from ores becomes an important task in flotation study.Based on the relationship between properties of chalcopyrite and pyrite and their flotability, the new technology of instant flotation for chalcopyrite and pyrite has been studied in this paper. The results of studying collectors' properties show that the collector named "CSU-A" has optimal selectivity for chalcopyrite and pyrite. It can effectively separate chalcopyrite from ores at low alkalinity without depressant. Practice proved, the new technology of instant flotation for chalcopyrite and pyrite with the character of collector "CSU-A" has reasonable flowsheet structure and advanced technique indexes. Compared with bulk flotation for chalcopyrite and pyrite, the grade of copper concentrates improved 1.68 percent and the recovery of it unproved 0.1 percent'.By determining adsorption amount, infrared spectrum and calculating of collector molecular properties, mechanism of collector " CSU-A " reaction with chalcopyrite and pyrite has been systematically studied in this paper. The results show that adsorption of collector "CSU-A" on chalcopyrite surface is chemical adsorption and on pyrite surface is physical adsorption. It was also shown that the main bonded atom of collector "CSU-A" is sulfur atom, it has stronger.feedback ability than the sulfur atom in xanthate. Because of chalcopyrite and pyrite have different electron numbers in their molecular d- orbits, collector " CSU-A " has selectivity for them.In addition, coarse particles of chalcopyrite can improve flotation recovery of fine particles of it. Applied the extended DLVO theory and hydrodynamic interaction of fine particles in turbulent flow, mechanism of coarse particle effectiveness has been studied in this paper. It was shown that fine and coarse particles of chalcopyrite can take place hydrophobic aggregation with "CSU-A" , the diameter of micro-vortices is the best criterion for the granularity of coarse particles when it carried up fine particles, and the particles of granularity of 60 micrometer mainly carry up the fine particles which granularity are under 10 micrometer.In a word, through the studies in this paper, the new technology of instant flotation for chalcopyrite .and pyrite is basically clarified, which establish groundwork of applying for the new technology.
