Pipeline optimization design is a complex system engineering . It aims at finding the program that economically meets the technology requirement . This paper first gives a overall summary of mathematical models of optimal design , optimum-seeking techniques and their development trends and the optimization researches in pipeline project.The author then presents a mathematical model for the optimal design of pipeline system transporting hot waxy crudes . Because the model is a constrained nonlinear optimization problem with mixed discrete variables.The thesis first introduces a new algorithm of optimal design withmixed discrete variables--Improved Chaotic Synthetic Algorithm program toconduct the optimum-seeking operations to the above-mentioned model.It is especially significant for improving the design and management arts of petroleum pipeline to the solution to the problem.All the computer programs for this dissertation have been compiled in VC++6.0 and debugged in PII computer. Finally ,I have carried out simulative computations for the optimal design of a certain pipeline and obtained satisfactory results , thereby the algorithm and programs proved to be reliable and practicable .
