Urban geo-environment assessment is one of most important part of urban planning and urban geological disaster prevention and control planning. In this paper, GIS Based Urban Geo-environment assessment is studied at theory and practice level, taking Xianyang city as research region.Firstly, based on the research of geo-environment assessment and GIS applications in urban geological research, Geo-environment assessment process and characteristics is analyzed, and the functions and applies of GIS are summed up. Therefore, as the sustain system of geo-environment assessment, GIS is confirmed.Secondly, on the basis of the foundation of GIS database, theory of space analysis and mode of GIS exploitation, using GIS model with the models of AHP model, fuzzy model of comprehensive evaluation, fee-loss index model etc., the applied model of urban geo-environment integrative assessment and geo-environment economic assessment is studied.Thirdly, based on a great deal of geo-environmental data of Xianyang city, geo-environmental condition is analyzed, and earthquake, seismic activity, sand liquefaction, loess collapsibility, flood etc. are considered as serious geological disasters in Xianyang city. After that, the urban geo-environment integrative assessment and economic assessment are finished and maps of them are drawn. Moreover, some suggestions about urban planning and land exploitation are put forward.Finally, geo-environmental information system of Xianyang city is constructed, using VB program and Supermap GIS. The system has the functions of data management, visualization, map query, theme-map making, map output etc.
