Hard zinc from thermo-plating zinc factory was treated for preparation of ZnO nanometer powder by chemical precipitation. The adding of surface-active agents in different steps and the agitation under ultrasonic condition were investigated in preparing process. White powder product was obtained, and characterized by XRD, IR, Sbet(BET specific surface area analyzer), and TEM(transmission electron microscopy). The crystal product was pure ZnO with hexahedral structure and dispersing sphere particles, and the average diameter was about 40-50nm. The UV-Vis adsorption-spectra showed that the nano-ZnO has high transparency to visible light and strong shield to ultraviolet light. Inhibiting bacteria experiments of the nano-ZnO was studied qualitatively and quantitatively. It is found that the nano-ZnO has strong function of inhibiting bacteria especially under light. It was possible to apply to industrial production due to the low cost of the process developed in the present paper.
