Liquid Crystals are a kind of substance which possess special properties compared with normal organic compounds. Their molecule structures determined that they have the abilities of self-orientation. Combined with the science of polymer, a new type of liquid crystalline material has been developped in recent years. This material has both the properties of liquid crystal and polymer, such as self-orientation and high tensile strength as well as high modulus.The subjects our work involves are listed below:a synthesis of a series of flexible space and β - diketone compounds . b synthesis of β - diketone based side chain liquid crystalline random copolyphenylsisesquioxane and its metal complex. We studied their properties by IR, NMR, OPM and DSC and found that the ratio of Cu2+/DK-C11-C12 affects the mesomorphic temperature range and the results show that chelating units can play a mesogen function.c Synthesis and mesomorphic properties study of Cu-coordinating liquid crystalline polysilsesquioxanes with heptyl group on the side chain. The data got by means of GPC and OPM indicated that the content of heptyl in the polymer exert an obvious influence on mesomorphic range and other properties. From all we have studied, we can conclude that with the increasing content of 1-heptyl the clear point temperature became lower, and the temperature range of the liquid crystal phase decreased.Studying the relation of liquid crystal with their structure and composition is of great importance in designing and synthesizing new functional liquidcrystalline materials. We have done certain job in this aspect, All we have done is meaningful to some extent.
