High speed machining (HSM) technology is one of advanced manufacturing technologies. It has a series of advantages such as high cutting efficiency, high surface integrity and low production cost. The shortage of rational high-speed cutting parameter has hindered the popularization of high-speed cutting technology in the mould and die manufacturing industry.The high-speed cutting database and expert system for mould & die is developed in this paper. The system has the following functions: the search of the mould & die materials, the selection of cutting tools and the inquiry of cutting parameters. For the shortage of high-speed cutting data, the system has also introduced the artificial intelligence technology, and the system can recommend rational machining process and cutting parameters for new tool materials and work-piece materials by the same way of human expert's mode of thinking. The following tasks have been studied:1. The construction of system's frame and design scheme after the process of collecting mould &die material data, high-speed cutting data and experts' experience and knowledge in the enterprises at home and abroad;2. Research on matching rules of HSM for mould &die, such as the matching rules between mould materials and tool materials;3. With the basic principles of database design and software engineering, the high-speed cutting database and expert system for mould & die is developed after the research of conceptual and logical structure of data. The purpose of logical design is to turn result of conceptual design into relation mode that is supported by Microsoft SQL Server 2000 DBMS.4. The research on the expert's reasoning mechanism, the mechanism of rewriting advised solutions and the mechanism of studying by itself.5. To write application program with PowerBuilder 9.0 for the system.
