As Chinese economy developed rapidly and the consumption of energy increased sharply, it's too apparent that available energy source is very limited. The enterprises with high consumption of energy in chemical industry of concentrated energy research actively for more effective methods to develop and make use of energy.Shanghai Chlorine-Alkali Company (SACA) is one of national oversize chemical enterprises which spent 700,000 tons per standard coal in consumption of water, electricity, steam and fuel oil. The cost of energy and raw materials takes up 85 percent of general cost chlorine-Alkali enterprises. To integrate and optimize heat exchanger networks and unit's process of SCAC's VCM plant, the thesis analyses and diagnoses their heat exchanger networks with the pinch point technology of UK Dr. Linnhoff. This paper consists of five parts of contents as follows:1. The art-of-state of pinch point technology was completely reviewed covering through the research principal to scheme. It clarified that adoption of technology in an original huge plant is very important to guide system energy integration.2. VCM plant contains some primary units: direction Chlorination unit, oxygen chlorination unit, EDC & VCM purification, and EDC cracking unit. The introduction of five units included process and scale, especially reviewed EDC cracking unit.3. The paper stated that the current status of energy and heat exchanger networks of VCM plant with detail datasheet. The system composite curve, general composite curve and balanced composite curve were gained by using authorized formally software UMIST to calculate the target of system energy. Consequently, the illogical were discovered from these curves and its optimization plans have been offered.4. The optimization plan for EDC cracking unit were analysed in engineering feasibility and evaluated the investment, eventually confirmed the finial plan. This plan have been adopted formally by SCAC.It is the first time to deeply research and develop the integration and optimization of heat exchanger networks in VCM plant of SCAC, and to systematically and comparatively analyse, so as to further instruct production and management.
