The researches and developments of petroleum resins was reviewed and the synthesis of modified petroleum resins(SP5) was studied. And the physical-chemical features and applications of SP5 were discussed. Such result shows that SP5 can substitute 40MS,importing from foreign country, applying in blending rubber as homogenizing agentWith aluminum chloride as catalyst, the SP5 was prepared by co-polymerizing of Methyl methacrylate and C9. In this course, the effects of reaction conditions such as catalyst amount, methyl methacrylate amount, reaction temperature and reaction time on the product yield were investigated by means of single factor and orthogonal experiments respectively, and the optimized synthesis conditions was concluded as following: reaction time was 4 h, catalyst amount was 1.4%, methyl methacrylate amount was 11%, reaction temperature was 24℃. Under this reaction conditions, the one-time product yield was 32.45%. Also, the primary co-polymerization reaction mechanism was investigated and the treatment of sewage was proposed. The sewage was lower than the requirement of environment after treated and the ammonium aluminum sulfate and aluminum hydroxide were obtained as by-products at the same time. Distillate returned to reaction after improvement of reaction processing, the yield of SP5 could increase to 35.75% by several circulation.40MS and SP5 were contrastively characterized by infrared spectroscopy and ultraviolet spectroscopy which identified the makeup of its groups, its other physical-chemical features were analysed such as softening point, bromine value, inherent viscosity, thermal stabilities and organic element contents of C, O and N, All the results showed that 40MS and SP5 have same structures. The homogenizations of 40MS and SP5, which dispersed different polarity rubber and inorganic fillers in blending rubber, was studied by testing the rubber mechanical performances —rigid, strength, abrasion, Moomey viscosity in different rubber formula, and surface structure by SEM, which show that SP5 could substitute for 40MS as homogenization agent in blending rubber.
