The waste coal tar pitch of QingHai branch of China Aluminium Co.LTD was studied as material. Three different methods were used to recycle the waste coal tar pitch in laboratory level.In the first part, the waste coal tar pitch was studied as material. Chemical additives were added to modify the pitch properties. Different process conditions, such as the percent of additive, the order of additive, reactive temperature, reactive time, were investigated to establish their influence on the insolubility of the pitch in toluene and coking-value and determine the best experimental conditions. On the best conditions, the toluene insolubility and coking-value of the pitch were respectively26.32% and 48.63%. The value of viscosity, the content of sulfur, the stability under the kneading temperature and carbon yield indicate that the modified pitch have excellent fluid and stability under the kneading temperature; the value of carbon yield is higher than the material pitch and the infrared spectroscopy indicate that the modified pitch is higher than material pitch in the degree of polymerize. A new method was developed to recycle the waste coal tar pitch. The study have nicer practical applied foreground.In the second part, with the mixed emulsifier and the method of ultrasonic emulsification, the waste coal tar pitch was used to produce emulsified fuel. The influence of the dosage of additive, the emulsifier with different value of HLB, the dosage of emulsifier and the water was studied and the viscosity and stability was determined. The viscosity value of the emulsified fuel produced in the best conditions was 360mpa.s in 40℃, and there was no water separated out in 30 days placed in normal temperature. The combustion reactivity of the emulsified fuel was investigated by TG and DTG . The waste coal tar pitch was reused reasonably.In the third part, the waste coal tar pitch was used to produce the material of needle coke (purified pitch) by solvent treatment. The orthogonal design method was applied in the research and the conditions were optimized. The optimum condition is the proportion of the twosolvents is 1:1; the dosage of the mixed solvent is 60ml; the heating time is 30min; the heating temperature is 50°C. The results showed that both the quinoline insolubility and the ash of the purified pitch is very low and it is suitable as material of needle coke.
