The Ultraviolet (UV) radiation curing technology is one of the most rapidly developing fields in the entire coatings industry. The low toxicity, cheapness, speed, control and ease of formulation and operation are some of the main advantages of this growing technology. In this paper, research progresses of radiation curing materials were reviewed. It included photochemistry, photo radical polymerization, photo initiator, UV curing, photo sensitive resin and reactive monomers. UV curing is used to induce photochemical polymerization or crosslinking of a monomer, prepolymer formulation containing a certain type of unsaturation, such as an acrylamido group, and an appropriate initiator. The latter is used to absorb the light energy and transform it into active species, such as radicals or ions, capable of inducing such reactions.Epoxy acrylate resin is an important photosensitive resin, in which bisphenol-A acrylate was most widely used in the field of UV coatings. The synthesis of epoxy sulfonic resin was studied, which needless of catalyst. Influences of solvent selection, reaction temperature and time, ratio of reacting materials on the resin properties were discussed. The result showed that the optimum reaction conditions as follows: solvent N,N-dimethylamide and the esterification reaction could be completed within 5 hours at a reaction temperature of 70℃when the content of hydroquinone was 0.2wt%. The effects on reaction were investigated by determination of acid value and epoxide value. The rate of reaction between epoxy resin and 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid obeyed first order, and the apparent activation energy is 9.76kJ/mol. The structure of the synthetic prepolymer was characterized using IR spectroscopy. In the present study, the bisphenol-A based epoxy sulphonate were synthesized. It was observed that the above prepared prepolymer when used with monomers can be cured in few seconds. Evaluation of film performance was carded out. Film hardness, adhesion and gelling percent were studied. The cured films were also evaluated in terms of resolvent capability and glass transition temperature. The resultant formulation showed greater adhesion, perfect hardness and higher glass transition temperature.
