With the development of modernization of traditional Chinese medicines (TCMs), the research on TCMs is getting deeper. But TCMs are very complicated black systems, which contains many constituents. There are still many constituents which can't be identified clearly. At the same time, the development of TCMs industry urgently needs a technique to evaluate and control the quality of TCMs.TCMs fingerprints are a powerful tool to solve the problem. But the common fingerprints have different defects. Such as, the chromatogram fingerprints don't content the total information of TCMs, because the samples needs pretreatment, in which some ingredient will lose. And the spectrum fingerprints can only provide the base information of material construction, and can't characterize the total concentration distribution of different chemical ingredient. Moreover, the type and the change of concentration are hard to demonstrate clearly and accurately. It is necessary to develop a new method. This paper presents a new TCMs fingerprint-electrochemical fingerprint. In the second chapter, the theoretical basis of electrochemical fingerprint was discussed in detail. From the perspective of nonlinear thermodynamics to explain the oscillatory system will be able to make different responses to different medicine. The concept and the basic electrochemical fingerprint information parameters were proposed. Chapter III discussed the stability, specificity of electrochemical fingerprint, and the various factors affecting the electrochemical fingerprint. Further more, the application in identification and evaluation the quality of traditional Chinese medicine was discussed. Chapter IV discussed the comparison between electrochemical fingerprint and other fingerprints. The comparison with chromatogram fingerprints were discussed in detail. The result shows that the electrochemistry fingerprints is a convenient, quick, and effective way to research TCM.
