Due to their unique chemical and physical properties of nonvolatility, nonflammability, high thermal stability and wide electrochemical potential window, ionic liquids are widely applied as a novel "green solvent" in many fields such as electrochemistry, organic synthesis, separation chemistry and polymer materials in recent years. At present, the researches of ionic liquids are focused on their synthesis and application. We first included the history, classification, synthetic methods and properties of ionic liquids; the application of ionic liquids in the polymerization was also referred. Then, we designed and synthesized several novel ionic liquids based on 2, 3, 3-trimethyl-3H-indolium cation. Their structures and compositions were characterized by FT-IR, ~1HNMR and elemental analysis. Synchronously, their melting point, solubility and thermal stability were determined. The results showed that the ionic liquids exhibited high purity, excellent solubility and thermal stability and have potential usage as alternatives to conventional organic solvents. In addition, we synthesized three acid ionic liquids based on imidazolium cation. The radical polymerization of acrylamide was carried out in these ionic liquids, the main factors that affect the conversion of monomer and the molecular weight of polymer such as the concentration of the monomer, the concentration of the initiator, the reaction time and reaction temperature were investigated. The results showed acrylamide couldpolymerize easily in those acid ionic liquids.Urea-formaldehyde (UF) resin adhesives are widely used in the production of plywood because of their good adhesiveness and low cost, but the problem of formaldehyde released from UF has attracted more and more attention. Therefore, the study and use of environmental friendly resin adhesives containing no formaldehyde become to be the focus of the researches. In the second part of this thesis, the main problems and solutions to these problems of the three formaldehyde resin adhesives used in plywood industry all over the world were concluded, according to the reality of production and requirement of market in plywood industry recently, several new resin adhesives without formaldehyde were synthesized. Using sucrose as a material, sucrose-urea, sucrose-diurea and sucrose-melamine adhesives were synthesized in the condition of acid. Through orthogonal experiments, the conditions of synthesis and curing reaction of these resins were investigated and the optimal conditions were obtained. IR spectra indicated that the assumed mechanism was partially right. Besides, thermodynamic analysis of the curing reaction of sucrose-urea resin adhesive was studied by TG and DSC. The properties of these three new adhesives without formaldehyde are similar to common UF resin adhesive, but the cost were lower, they may have an bright application in the production of plywood.
