Sanitary landfilling is the most important method for municipal solid waste(MSW)disposal.Since the end of 1980's,planned landfills have been established and applied in Chinese cities,Although successful experience has been accumulated since then,more engineering problems are exposed which need resolving urgently,and the landfill environment is always re-polluted.On the basis of landfills investigation and tests on MSW properties, the geotechnical engineering problems are studied,which are pertinent to the landfill's safety,durability and applicability.Taking into the consideration of the actual Chinese landfill conditions,technical measures for landfill construction are proposed,including the material selection and construction layout of base liner system;the composition and design method of cover system.The leachate producing process and the components were analyzed;The leachate re-circulation method was discussed for its feasibility,technical and the influence on landfill management and maintenance;Based on the analysis of leachate leakage through the base liner,the equations for estimating the leakage quantity are presented.The method for evaluating the equivalency of different base liners was suggested.The research on the geotechnical engineering problems is underway in china.The methods and recommendations presented need testing and ameliorating in practice.It needs the cooperation of engineers and ameliorating in comprehensive tests,field measurements and theoretical analysis,It also needs the assistance from environmentalist and the support from laws and government policy.
