Spiral bevel gears are one of basic mechanical units that transmit motion between concurrent axes.Because of the great merits of the transmission, such as the big overlap ratio, the high loading capacity, the high transmitting efficiency, the stability, the small noises, and so on, spiral bevel gears are widely used in automotive vehicle, planes, machine tools and other kinds of machines.The finishing of spiral bevel gears is mainly achieved by lapping. Lapping can not only play the pre-running-in, reduce the profile and pitch errors, but also reduce the deformation after the heat treatment to some extent. Lapping is a hard surface processing technology. Lapping can remove small amount of allowances on the surface of gears by grinding and therefore effectively improve the surface's smoothness and improve the gears contacting conditions. In addition, the lapping technology is recognizes to be the best way to reduce noise.This paper is mainly about the research on lapping mechanism of Spiral bevel gears and put forward some ways for technological improvement in lapping. The main research works and conclusion are listed as follows:1.Based on the analysis of the gear-lapping cutting theory and the transformation from a spatial model of gear-lapping process to a simple flat one, this paper derived the formula of cutting force and the maximum depth of cut.2.This paper deeply analyzed the commonly-used gear-lapping moving model of V&H adjustment on numerical control spiral bevel gears gear-lapping machine. From the angle of TCA(Tooth Contact Analysis),the relationship between the V&H adjustment and the movement trend of the tooth contact area, and the automatic control theory of backlash were analyzed.3.By making use of the influence on gear-lapping process from the kinematical and geometrical errors of machine tool, and the idea of ETCA(Error Tooth Contact Analysis),The improved algorithm on V&H adjustment value was brought up.4.This paper analyzed the rate of gears lapping between the working depth of the tooth, and the boundary of gear under lapping, which guided the setting of lapping process parameters.5.Based on the idea of ETCA, the experiment on the Gleason PHOENIX 600 HTL Turbo-Lapper has been carried out, by making use of the lapping movement control technology and fixed-point lapping technology, which is also compared with the lapping technology based on the idea of TCA. The result of the comparison shows that, the lapping technology, based on ETCA, is completely practical and effective, which can also promote the improvement of the gear lapping effect and the lapping technology.
