Hot working die steel 3Cr2W8V is commonly used to manufacture male and female die blocks of forging and mold-casting dies working under high temperature, high stress and without impact load. It has good resistance to cold and thermal fatigue and good hardenability. However, some complex thin wall die impression is difficult to make by machining method and is easily to distort by quenching or cracking when heat- treated after machining, which will even result in the rejection of the die. Electrical Discharge Machining technology can be used to process complex dies with less distortion of heat treatment and improving the precision of the dies. In this paper, EDM method was applied to research the processing of 3Cr2W8V by experiments, the results offered a technical basis for the processing of 3Cr2W8V complex die impression with high efficiency, low loss and high precision.In this paper, the mechanism and process of EDM were analyzed, The EDM processing experiment of 3Cr2W8V was designed, and the technical effects were comprehensively evaluated by three process indexes such as speed, electrod wear and surface smoothness. The influnces of electrical paramaters on the technical indexes were studied, and the technical rule of EDM was summarized. The influencing degree of electrical paramaters on the technical index is as follows: peak current (ie)>pulse duration (ti)>pulse interval (to). The reasonable scope of electrical parameters on the EDM processing of 3Cr2W8V is: peak current 9.4A≤ie≤14.2A, pulse duration 130μs≤ti≤240μs and pulse interval 24μs≤to≤42μs.Based on the reasonable scope, Orthogonal test on EDM processing 3Cr2W8V was carried out, the best electrical parameters were obtained: the peak current ie=9.4A, pulse duration ti=240μs, and the pulse interval to=32μs. According to the optimized electrical parameters, EDM experiments with the regular hexagon, pentagram and U-shaped electrodes individually, and qualified simple impressions have been obtained.The experimental results provided optimized electrical parameters for the high efficient, low loss and high precision EDM processing of 3Cr2W8V materials and it has certain reference significance for the manufacturing of 3Cr2W8V complex die impressions.
