With the rapid development of the world economy, development and utilization of wind energy resources has become a very important component of sustainable development strategies. The future of the vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT) will be extremely promising due to its unique advantages. Currently, the research on HAWT is relatively mature in the world, while the research of VAWT especially for Darrieus rotor is less. This paper tookΦtype Darrieus wind turbine as the research object, combined with the relevant research at home and abroad, using theoretical analysis, mathematical model and the CFD numerical simulation methods, focusing on the aerodynamic performance of theΦtype Darrieus rotor and NACA0018 airfoil.The main task of this paper are as follows:(1) introduced the basis theory concerning the VAWT and airfoil, and analyzed the main aerodynamic parameters affecting the aerodynamic characteristics of the airfoil; analyzed the principle of rotation of the Darrieus rotor, and expounded the aerodynamic characteristics of the blade of theΦtype rotor in particular. (2) calculated the aerodynamic geometric parameters of the rotor through establishing a mathematical model of theΦtype Darrieus rotor, and designed the aerodynamic geometric parameters of Darrieus rotor. Combined with the structure characteristics of Darrieus rotor, designed the Troposkien curves. Using trapezoidal approximation algorithm for the wind rotor, calculated and analyzed the overall aerodynamic characteristics of the wind rotor, including the torque and wind utilization factor of wind rotor at different times and in different positions, and determined the launch parameters such as wind speed and rotation speed. (3) selected NACA0018 airfoil for airfoil of the MW-class VAWT; With the application of the CFD methods, analyzed flow field around NACA0018 airfoil, obtained the airfoil aerodynamic characteristics at the different angles of attack, and discussed the influence of the Reynolds number on the airfoil aerodynamic characteristics. Based on the numerical simulation to the three-dimensional flow field of Darrieus rotor, this paper revealed the 3-D flow features of the rotor, and discussed the influence of the vertical height and the shaft on the aerodynamic performance ofΦtype Darrieus rotor.
