Temperature load is one of the main loads that effect on the arch dam. Holding the temperature field and the corresponding thermal stress field during construction timely and exactly play an important role in dam construction. So, simulating the temperature field of concrete arch dam during construction period becomes an important research subject. In this paper, based on the construction characteristics of concrete arch dam, finite element software, a world wide popular common software used in finite element analysis, is suggested to simulating the temperature field and thermal stress field of concrete arch dam during construction period. By congregating some advanced functions of finite element software, the procedure of simulation is provided, in which, the change of atmosphere temperature and concrete hydration heat changing with the age and the initial temperature of concrete as well as the real effect of placing in layers are all taken into account.By use of the suggested method, according to a scheduled table of construction, temperature field and thermal stress field of a typical concrete arch dam within whole construction period under several different placing procedures are calculated by emulation the layer constructing of the dam. After a thorough study on the temperature field and thermal stress field, distribution and their change regularities, some useful conclusions are obtained.Ketian concrete arch dam is located in Yunnan province. In this paper, the temperature field and thermal stress field of this concrete arch dam during construction period is given by use of finite element software. The results of analysis indicate that the construction temperature and concrete hydration and heat ambient temperature have grate effect on the maximum temperature in the concrete arch dam. The results also show that the temperature of the inner core of the dam will tend towards the state temperature and this process will takes more time in the under part of the dam. At the same time, this results offer the reliable basis for the corresponding temperature control measures taken in the arch dam construction.
