Traffic signs are safety facilities for traffic management. Traffic signs use graphics, symbols and language to convey specific information. It provide road users with traffic information. Guide signs is one of important traffic signs. The driver get routing information by guide signs. With the rapid development of the city, there are new questions in the design of guide signs. The problems of guide signs as follows:the methods of guide signs'information selection can not meet the needs of the road users. Locations and road information are not clear, guide signs are lack of systematic and coherent in information dissemination.In short, because of these problems, road users are confused or disoriented with the guide system, resulting in delays, driving mistakes, even leading to undesirable consequences, such as traffic accidents.In view of the fact that above problems, this paper, based on the cognitive point of view of the driver, carry out the cognitive and design research of urban road signs. First, elaborate on the essential feature and the function of the road sign. Then, based on the theory of the cognition psychology.according to mechanism that the driver cognize the information of the road signs, Using the theory of space cognition and map cognition, analyzed the cognition process of the driver to the information of the guide sign. Summarized the layout method and the general principle of information selection of the guide signs. Then, investigated and analyzed the guide sign in city of Kunming. There are many problems about the guide signs. Analyzed two kinds of the guide sign used at present.Put forward a kind of the improved plan of the guide sign based on the cognitive point of view of the driver. Finally, researched and designed the experiments and the methods of Evaluation. Using the driving simulator, carried on the experiments to evaluate the intelligibility of the guide sign. Then compare the evaluation result, it indicate:the new design guide sign is more suitable for the level of people's cognitive. The leading role of the new design guide sign is more strong. The results show that the design of road signs based on cognitive behavior has a stronger leading function.
