The strength, deformation and failure behavior of rock can be quite complex, affected by such factors as specimen shape and loading path. Solid and hollow specimens with various inner diameters were machined from two marble blocks with fine and medium crystal. Uniaxial and pseudo-triaxial compression tests on these specimens were performed in servo-controlled testing machine. The uniaxial compression test results show that there are no essential differences in the behavior of strength and deformation between solid and hollow specimens. However, under pseudo-triaxial compression the strengths of hollow specimens increase with confining pressure. The Young's moduli of hollow specimens with fine crystal are lower than that of solid ones, and largen with confining pressure, while confining pressure and hole have essential effect to the Young's moduli of hollow specimens with medium crystal. The deformations of hollow specimens are smaller than that of solid specimens when the stress axial reaches to its peak. The failure in the hollow specimen starts from the hole wall and occurs deeper in the rock with increasing stress, which induce the strength of specimen lower. On the other hand, shearing slide happened in the hollow specimen, which has no relation with hole. The total bearing capacity of specimen has no change, if take no account of the partial failure. However, the bearing area becomes small for the hole, the strength of hollow specimen will be increased, and the bigger of the inner diameter, the higher will be the strength.
