Combining with the nowadays' study actualities of driver's seat suspension system home and abroad and the characteristics of existing magnetorheological damper (MR damper) and based on the requirements of the driver's seat suspension, a kind of MR damper with exterior coil was designed and studied. The finished work and achieved results are summarized as follows:First, the working mode, operating principle, performance evaluation indexes of the MR damper and the damping force of a mixed working mode MR damper was analyzed. The typical structural characteristics of existing MR damper was also analyzed,which will provide theoretical basis and structure reference for the design of MR damper used in seat suspension.Next, the choose of magnetorheological fluid (MRF) was determined and according to its performance the approximate relations between the magnetic induction and the magnetic field, the yield stress and the magnetic induction were fitted. Based on the principles of structure design and the performance requirements of seat suspension for damper the main structure parameters of damper were calculated and determined.Then, based on the basic theory of electromagnetic finite element analysis and the electromagnetic field finite element analysis module of the software ANSYS the electromagnetic field finite element analysis of designed MR damper with exterior coil was carried out. And from the standpoint of rationalizing the magnetic field distribution within the damping passage of MR damper, the main structure dimensions and the material choose of main parts of MR damper were optimized.Finally, the damping characteristics of the designed MR damper were experimentally studied. Study results show that MR damper with exterior coil has good damping characteristics and the adjusting scope of damping force is large, which meet the original design requirements.
